Social and Emotional Learning
ETAC SEL Publication April 2017

Every day, youths navigate through a variety of social situations, each with their own set of behavioral expectations and challenges. When youth experience any kind of emotional upset or trauma, as military-connected students do, it can create difficulties with handling social pressures and emotional decision-making. This brief highlights four types of social and emotional supports: behavior management programs, counseling services, parent and community engagement, and peer support and mentoring. Lessons learned and reflective questions are included to provide guidance for other districts interested in implementing social and emotional support programs.
